Meet The Rats
Diet: AGCR rats are fed Oxbow Regal Rat pellets. For protein they get egg, real meat, and cooked beans. They also enjoy fresh produce as it's available.
Bedding: I use shredded newspaper and aspen wood shavings (Not too fine as this style can be dusty). Maternity cages get a fleece liner in the pan to avoid babies getting stuck to bedding. Cages get fleece blankets, hammocks, and mats for a wire/solid ratio. I suggest freezing wood shavings before use as they often contain mites (Easily maintained, just annoying).
Enrichment: Rats have numerous toys in their cage to chew on as well as various things to climb on and through. They also get to have playtime in the bath tub and receive various treats during playtime. I put their tunnels and toys in the tub and when they are out I turn on the shower and wash away the poop! Well trained ratties get to run around the house or a specific room.
Health care: Minor wounds are treated at home. URIs are treated with antibiotics. Major illness or wounds will be treated by the vet.
Cleaning: I wipe down items and shelves with my Norwex cleaning cloth and vinegar/water solution. Blankets are washed in hot water with white vinegar. Never wash bedding in laundry detergent as this can upset their sensitive systems.
